5 Stages of Knowing God: Trust

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭NKJV

One morning in 2019, while living in Nigeria, I woke up and planned to go to work, but my car wouldn’t cooperate. I spent some time trying basic mechanics, but nothing worked. By the time I realised I wasn’t making progress, it was too late for Uber; traffic was already building up. My solution: take a bike.

It was a forty-minute bike ride to work, my first time. The journey was pleasant until we reached the Third Mainland Bridge, the longest bridge in West Africa. Then, it became nerve-wracking. At this point, I tried looking over the rider’s shoulder to the right and left, but every time I did this, the rider got uncomfortable.

After a while, he couldn’t hold back and said, “What are you doing?” I explained, “I need to see what’s ahead.” He replied, “If you keep doing that, you’re putting us both at risk.” I asked, “How can I see ahead and be sure I’m safe then?” He simply said, “You can’t. You just have to trust me.”

In that moment, I understood the essence of faith: trusting the unknown future to a known God. But why is this so difficult? We place our lives in the hands of strangers every day – Uber drivers, doctors, lawyers, pilots, and more. We know little about them beyond their credentials, yet we trust them. The reason we are not able to trust God in a similar manner is because we do not know his credentials.

The Bible contains the credentials of God! This book tells us about the mighty works he has done in the past; it spoke of men and women who have in the past “look to him and become radiant, and their faces were not  put to shame” (Psalm 34:6). The more we devote ourselves to the word of God, the more we find strength to trust him that he is able to do for us what he has been able to do for others. This is the first step in knowing God.

The more we trust God, the more we’ll obey Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing yourself through your word so that through it I might find strength to trust you to manifest in a similar manner in my life. Please help me to be disciplined enough to study your words diligently.
