Matthew 9:36 (NKJV)
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
One of the clearest expressions of God’s love is His ability to truly see people. Jesus did not look at crowds and see inconvenience, noise, or interruption. He saw weariness. He saw confusion. He saw people longing for direction and care. Love begins with seeing rightly.
Many times, we look without really seeing. We notice behavior, appearance, or attitude, but miss the condition of the heart. Jesus looked beyond the surface and was moved with compassion. His love did not remain passive. What He saw stirred His heart, and what stirred His heart shaped His actions.
This compassion reveals the nature of God’s love. He does not overlook pain or dismiss struggle. He is attentive to the internal state of people, not just their outward presentation. Weariness is often hidden behind productivity, smiles, or noise. God’s love notices what others ignore.
When love truly sees, it responds with mercy rather than judgment. Instead of frustration, there is patience. Instead of criticism, there is care. Jesus did not condemn the crowds for being scattered. He recognized their need for guidance. Love sees brokenness and moves toward it.
This dimension of love challenges us personally. Are we attentive to the people around us, or are we too consumed with our own concerns to notice their weariness? Loving others begins with slowing down enough to see them as God sees them. Compassion grows when perception changes.
Ask God to give you eyes like His today. Ask Him to help you see beyond behavior into need, beyond noise into weariness. When love sees clearly, it becomes a powerful instrument of healing.
Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see people the way you see them. Help me to look beyond the surface and respond with compassion rather than judgment. Teach me to love attentively and to allow my heart to be moved by the needs around me. Use me as an expression of your care and mercy. Amen.
