Abraham: Faith in Action

“Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?” – James 2:21 (NIV)

Abraham’s story is one of the most powerful examples of faith the Bible offers. When God asked him to offer his son Isaac-the child of promise-on the altar, Abraham didn’t hesitate. That moment wasn’t just about belief; it was about obedience. James points to this act as evidence that faith isn’t complete until it shows up in how we respond to God, even when the cost feels high.

It would’ve been easy for Abraham to say, “I trust God,” and still cling tightly to Isaac. But real faith takes God at His word, even when it doesn’t make sense. Abraham’s willingness to act proved that his trust wasn’t just talk-it was rooted deep. And because of that, Scripture says he was called God’s friend. What a beautiful picture: faith leading to friendship with God.

This doesn’t mean we earn God’s love through works. Rather, it shows that obedience is the fruit of genuine faith. Our actions don’t save us, but they confirm that our trust in God is alive and real. When we step out in faith-whether it’s forgiving someone, giving generously, or following God’s lead into the unknown-we’re walking in Abraham’s footsteps.

So, how is your faith being tested right now? Is there something God is asking of you that feels risky, uncomfortable, or costly? Trust Him. Step forward. Faith grows when it’s put into action, and that’s when we begin to experience the kind of deep, intimate friendship with God that Abraham enjoyed.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the example of Abraham, who trusted you with everything-even when it was hard. Help me to follow you with the same obedience. Let my faith be more than words-let it be seen in how I live, give, and obey. I want to be your friend, too. Amen.
