April 24: Faith That Advances Toward the Giant

Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.'” — 1 Samuel 17:45 (NKJV)

Everyone else in the army saw a giant too big to fight. David saw a giant too big to miss.

That shift in perspective is the whole story. Goliath had been standing in the valley for forty days, shouting his defiance every morning and every evening, and for forty days Israel’s army had done the same thing: heard the voice, felt the fear, and retreated to their tents. The giant had not changed. The threat had not changed. What changed when David arrived was the interpretive framework. David was not calculating the size of Goliath against the size of himself. He was calculating the size of Goliath against the size of God, and that comparison made the giant look very different.

David ran toward Goliath. That detail is not incidental. He did not edge forward cautiously. He did not approach with his shoulders hunched and his options mentally rehearsed. He ran, with his sling in his hand and the name of the Lord on his lips, toward the thing that had been intimidating everyone else for more than a month. Faith at full speed.

What David said before he threw the stone is as important as the stone itself. He made a declaration: I come to you in the name of the Lord. He was not announcing his own credentials. He was announcing whose presence he carried. The name of God is not just a title; it is a reality, a weight, a force that reorders every calculation. When David said “in the name of the Lord,” he was saying: this fight is not actually between you and me. It is between you and Him, and that is a fight you have already lost.

What is your Goliath today? What has been standing in your valley, shouting at you morning and evening, making you feel too small to fight? Today, do not retreat to your tent. Pick up your stone and run. The name of the Lord is still the most powerful weapon in any valley.

Prayer

Father, give me David’s eyes today. I do not want to measure my giants against my own strength anymore. I want to see them the way David saw Goliath: already defeated, standing in the wrong valley, defying a God they cannot beat. I come against every giant in my life today in the name of the Lord of hosts. I am not running away. I am running toward. Go before me, and let the stone fly true. In Jesus’ name, amen.
