Are You Drunk Too?

‘Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Acts 2:13

The reason I detest alcohol isn’t because I’m a christian; I only tasted it once and vowed never to again! It was my first time and I drank it like it was juice, unaware of how it quickly affected me. Trouble arose when I tried to get to the nearest bus stop to get a vehicle home. The height of the road seemed to have doubled, so I walked carefully in response to what I was experiencing. It was such a torture. Under the influence, I became bold and talked excessively without control. Indeed, whatever fills a man controls him. 

This experience parallels Acts 2:13, where the disciples filled with the Holy Spirit appeared drunk to onlookers. The reason is clear: when filled with the Holy Spirit, a person surrenders control to God, just as someone intoxicated with wine loses control.

When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to do things that are beyond our natural abilities. The Spirit enables us to respond to life’s challenges with faith and confidence, rather than relying solely on our own understanding or human reasoning. Just as the disciples seemed “drunk” with the Spirit, so too are we called to live lives that are characterised by a radical dependence on God’s Spirit.

Paul encourages believers to be filled with the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18, comparing it to being drunk with wine. Just as alcohol can influence a person’s behaviour and actions, so too does the Holy Spirit influence and transform the lives of believers. When we are filled with the Spirit, we no longer view circumstances through the lens of human logic or earthly limitations. Instead, we see possibilities where others see impossibilities, and we respond to challenges with faith and courage.

Spirit-filled living is not about being out of control, but rather about being under the control and influence of the Holy Spirit. It is about allowing God’s Spirit to lead and guide us in every aspect of our lives, empowering us to live in obedience and walk in faithfulness. When we surrender ourselves to the leading of the Spirit, we can experience the fullness of God’s power and presence in our lives.
