Do Whatever He Tells You

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

John 2:3

We ended the conversation about the wedding at Cana in Galilee yesterday with an understanding of how serious it is to run out of wine at a Jewish wedding. We agreed that this family simply needed a miracle and thankfully, Jesus the miracle worker was at the wedding. So, maybe there’s no problem after all; well, not so fast. Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” but in response Jesus said “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” (John 2:4)

Sounds like Jesus wasn’t going to do anything to the situation at first, Mary could have given up at this point but instead she turned to the servants and told them “Do whatever he tells you.” What audacity! Jesus didn’t even agree to do anything yet Mary held a strong faith that as long as Jesus was there, there would be a solution, all they had to do was obey, however crazy his instructions might get. 

No sooner had Mary left that Jesus gave the first instruction to the servants. They were to fill the ceremonial washing jars with water and then take a sample of that water to the master of the banquet. For context, these jars usually hold abandoned (useless) water; useful only for feet washing. Besides, it wasn’t like the water had already changed nor were the servants permitted to taste it first. This is clearly a suicide mission, it negates all forms of logic except that Jesus said so. 

While the attitude of Mary is commendable in taking the problem to Jesus, more commendable is the faith of these servants who obeyed even when they couldn’t see reason. Yet, because it is the words of Jesus they moved swiftly to obey, taking no thought for their lives. 

God is looking for more servants today, men of faith whose basis for obedience is simply because Jesus says so. They do not need to see vision or be visited by an angel, the written word of God is enough for them. They are men who can confidently say that God said it, I believe it and that settles it.
