Embrace Your Prophetic Calling

…I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” 

Numbers 11:29

As we bring this first phase of our study in the book of numbers to a close, I want to leave you with a radical new covenant thought from a man who lived under the old covenant. 

In Numbers 11:24-30, we encounter a powerful moment in the life of Moses and the Israelites, as God chooses to share His Spirit not only with Moses but also with seventy elders of Israel. These men were appointed to assist Moses in his leadership role, and God empowered them with His Spirit to share in the burden of leading and guiding His people.

As the Spirit of God came upon the seventy elders, they began to prophesy, speaking forth the words and will of God. However, two of the elders, Eldad and Medad, were not present at the gathering yet still received the Spirit in their tent. When Joshua, Moses’ assistant, expressed concern over their prophesying, Moses responded with a profound statement: “I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them.” (Numbers 11:29).

In this passage, we see Moses longing for a day when all God’s people would be empowered by His Spirit to prophesy and speak forth His truth. Today, we are living in that reality. Through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, every believer has been empowered to hear from God, speak for God, and participate in the work of advancing His kingdom.

Yet, how often do we embrace and exercise this prophetic calling in our lives? Do we actively seek to hear from God, to receive His guidance and direction, and to boldly proclaim His truth to those around us? Or do we shrink back in fear or doubt, hesitant to step out in faith and prophesy?

As followers of Christ, we are called to be prophetic voices in our generation, declaring the love, truth, and power of God to a world in need. Let us not underestimate the impact of our words and actions when spoken and empowered by the Spirit of God. Let us boldly embrace our prophetic calling, knowing that it is God who works in us both to will and to do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). Just one word from you might be all it takes to stop a man from committing suicide or to change from a path of destruction to the light of truth. It is time to speak forth.
