Fasting for the Journey

Ezra 8:21 (NIV)
“There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.”

When Ezra prepared to lead the people back to Jerusalem, he was faced with a practical problem: the journey was long, the road was dangerous, and they were carrying valuable treasures. Logic would say, “Ask the king for military protection.” But Ezra chose a different route-he called for a fast. Why? Because he had already declared that God’s hand would protect them, and now it was time to walk that faith out publicly.

It’s easy to say we trust God when everything is comfortable. But what about when the stakes are high? Ezra could have played it safe, but instead, he leaned into spiritual preparation over physical protection. By fasting and humbling themselves, the people were saying, “God, we depend on you, not on human strength.” Their faith wasn’t theoretical-it was tested on the road.

This story invites us to consider how we prepare for our own journeys-decisions, transitions, or challenges we’re about to face. Do we reach for worldly backup plans first, or do we pause to seek God through fasting and prayer? Fasting isn’t a magic formula-it’s a posture of the heart. It reminds us that our greatest need is not more security or strategy, but more of God’s presence and guidance.

Father, thank you for being my protector and guide. Teach me to rely on you, especially when the road ahead feels uncertain. As I fast and seek your face, strengthen my faith and prepare my heart for the journey. Lead me, Lord-not by might or power, but by your Spirit.
