From Child to Son: Moving from Consumption to Contribution

Key Verse:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 (NKJV)

The difference between a child and a son is not just age but also responsibility. A child enjoys the love of a father, receiving affection, care, and provision. But a son, having received the love of the father, begins to give back-offering something in return for all the love he has received. In the first phase of our relationship with the Father, God’s love is the focus. He gave His Son for us, demonstrating that love always gives. As Christians, many of us focus on enjoying this love and blessing, but there is more to the relationship than just receiving.

The second phase of our walk with God involves service-a phase where we move from just receiving to giving. God is not only looking for our hearts to receive His love; He is also expecting something from us in return. Just like Jesus, we are called to bring pleasure to the Father by offering our lives in service to Him.

In a family, maturity is shown through contribution. When a child grows up, they begin to contribute to household chores, running errands, and helping with responsibilities. A mother’s heart is pleased when her child says, “Mummy, how can I help you?” This is a sign of growth, maturity, and a willingness to contribute. In the same way, God expects us to move beyond being spiritual “children” who only consume His blessings. Maturity in our relationship with God comes when we begin to serve, contribute, and live out our faith in action.

Consumption without contribution is a mark of irresponsibility. If we only take without giving back, it doesn’t bring pleasure to the Father. Similarly, as believers, we are called not only to receive God’s love but also to contribute to His Kingdom through our actions, our service, and our commitment to His work. While this message applies to our heavenly Father, it also extends to our earthly relationships and responsibilities. Just as we are called to serve the Father, we are called to serve those around us-our families, our communities, and our workplaces.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your incredible love for me. I am grateful for all you have done for me, and I want to move beyond simply receiving your love to actively serving and giving back to you. Help me to grow in maturity and take responsibility in all areas of my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
