God Loves You First

Key Scripture
1 John 4:19 (NKJV)
We love Him because He first loved us.

Love did not begin with us. It did not start with our obedience, our repentance, or our pursuit of God. Love began with God Himself. Before we ever thought about Him, before we ever reached for Him, before we ever responded, He had already set His love upon us. This is the foundation of our faith, God is not reacting to our love, He is the source of it.

This truth changes everything. Many believers live as though God’s love must be earned, sustained, or proven through consistent spiritual performance. But Scripture tells us the opposite. God’s love is initiatory. He loved first. Our love is always a response, never the cause. When we forget this, we slip into striving, guilt, and insecurity. When we remember it, rest returns to our souls.

The love of God is not drawn out by our goodness, but by His nature. He loved us when we were weak, when we were wandering, when we were unaware of Him. His love went ahead of us into our future, waited patiently in our rebellion, and met us at the point of our need. This is not sentimental love. It is deliberate, covenantal, and sacrificial love.

Understanding that God loved first also reshapes how we love others. We no longer love from emptiness or obligation. We love from overflow. We forgive because we have been forgiven. We show mercy because mercy has already been shown to us. We extend grace because grace found us first.

This morning, pause and let this truth settle deeply in your heart. You are not chasing God’s love. You are responding to it. You are not trying to earn His affection. You are learning to live from it. Let every act of devotion this month flow from this unshakable foundation, God loved you first.

Prayer
Father, thank you for loving me before I ever knew you, before I ever chose you, before I ever responded. Help me to rest in your initiating love and not strive to earn what you have freely given. Teach me to love you and others from a place of gratitude and assurance, knowing that your love came first. Amen.
