God’s Call to Active Participation

Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

Israel’s march around Jericho is one of the most unconventional military strategies ever recorded. For six days, they circled the city once each day, with priests carrying the ark and blowing trumpets made of ram’s horns. The people were instructed to remain silent. On the seventh day, they were to march around the city seven times, and the priests would make a long blast with their trumpets. This plan, devised by God, left no room for doubt that the victory would be His doing. Yet, it required Israel’s active participation every step of the way.

God could have easily sent an angelic army or rained down fire from heaven to conquer Jericho. He could have chosen to act while Israel stood aside and did nothing. However, His plan was different. He wanted His people to be a part of the miracle. This involvement was not just a matter of obedience but a demonstration of faith. By following God’s instructions, even when they seemed nonsensical from a human perspective, the Israelites showed their trust in Him. Their faith was evidenced by their actions, not just their words.

This pattern of requiring active participation continues in how God works with us today. While He is all-powerful and can achieve His purposes without our help, He often chooses to involve us in His work. This involvement deepens our faith and allows us to experience His power firsthand. When we believe God’s instructions, it compels us to act. True faith is never passive; it always leads to action. If we truly believe what God has said, we will be moved to step out in obedience, no matter how unconventional or challenging His instructions may seem.

Reflecting on Joshua 6:4, we see a profound lesson about faith and obedience. God calls us to be active participants in His plans, not just passive observers. He asks us to trust Him enough to act on His instructions, even when we don’t fully understand them. This act of faith not only brings about God’s intended results but also strengthens our relationship with Him. As we step out in faith and obedience, we become part of the miracle He is performing in our lives and in the world around us.
