Growing in Sonship: From Love to Responsibility

Key Verse:
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” – Matthew 3:17 (NKJV)

In Matthew 3:17, we see two profound statements made by the Father: “This is My beloved Son” and “in whom I am well pleased.” These statements reveal the two phases of our journey as children of God. The first phase highlights God’s love for us, while the second phase focuses on our responsibility to bring pleasure to the Father as we mature in our relationship with Him.

As a natural father, there is a time when you pour all your love, care, and affection into your newborn child. In those early years, the child is completely dependent on you, and there is a sense of unconditional devotion. To the parent, the child can do no wrong. But as the child grows and matures into adulthood, the relationship shifts. The parent begins to expect responsibility and accountability. There comes a point when the child is expected to take care of the parent, just as the parent once took care of the child.

This same progression happens in our relationship with God. In the early stages of our walk with Him, His focus is on pouring His love into us. However, as we grow and mature spiritually, the Father’s expectation of us shifts. Just as a parent desires to see their child mature and take on responsibility, God desires us to grow in faith and character, ultimately bringing Him pleasure through our actions, choices, and obedience.

As His children, it is also our responsibility to honor and reward our earthly parents for their love and sacrifices. No parent wants their child to remain a baby forever; they long to see their child grow, mature, and become a responsible adult. This is true in our relationship with God as well. He longs for us to grow and become more like Him, and He desires for us to take responsibility for our spiritual growth and our role in His Kingdom.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your unconditional love and care for me. I pray that as I grow in my relationship with you, I will mature spiritually and become the kind of child who brings you pleasure. Help me to take responsibility for my spiritual journey and to honour you in all I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
