Have The People Sit Down

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”

John 6:10a

A few days ago, we began examining the feeding of the five thousand, and yesterday we concluded that Jesus wants us to look deep within because He has given us all that we need to handle our current situations. Whatever the situation, God has already provided a way out; we just need to trust Him to help us see it and believe in Him wholeheartedly.

There is a remarkable aspect of this miracle that often goes unnoticed. How do you get over five thousand hungry people to sit down when they can see only five loaves of bread and two fish? That, in itself, is a miracle. One of the hardest things to manage is a crowd of hungry people; their hunger pushes them to their limits because they want to satisfy it. Even a smaller quantity of food might have caused a stampede, as everyone would want a bite. Yet, these people obeyed Jesus and sat down in an orderly fashion, even grouping themselves for the distribution.

This is a display of faith in Jesus. The people had been listening to Him for a while and believed His Word. So when He asked them to sit down, they did. Take a moment to reflect on the many times you have been anxious, worried, or tried to handle things your own way when Jesus told you to wait. Sometimes, it seems that if you sit and do nothing, you will lose everything that should be yours. However, this attitude reflects unbelief. The proof of our faith in God is shown in how we respond to His Word, just like these people did. As I mentioned about my event, it was only when I remained calm and trusted God, who had asked me to organize the program in the first place, that I saw His hand at work. He multiplied the little I had.

So, Jesus is saying to you today, “Sit down,” “Be still and know that I am God.” He wants us to live a life of faith, built upon His Word, to come to a place where we trust His Word above all else. This is where we can be still, calm, and filled with peace and joy because we know that Jesus is in control. As you go about your day, place everything upon the Word of God.
