How God Blesses

The Lord said to Moses, “ Accept these from them, that they may be used in the work at the tent of meeting. Give them to the Levites as each man’s work requires.”

Numbers 7:4-5

I once heard someone praying and he said ‘God please bless me anyhow’. Honestly, I found it laughable. God doesn’t bless anyhow, his blessings follow a pattern such that if you align yourself with this pattern, you will automatically begin to walk in the blessing of God. In Numbers 7, we have an image of the patterns responsible for God’s blessing. 

In Numbers 7:1-11, we read about the offering brought by the leaders of the Israelite tribes to dedicate the tabernacle. Among the offerings were six wagons and twelve oxen, which Moses divided among the three Levite families—Gershonites, Merarites, and Kohathites—according to their respective duties.

As Moses distributed the wagons and oxen, we observe a significant detail: he gave two wagons and four oxen to the Gershonites, four wagons and eight oxen to the Merarites, but nothing to the Kohathites. Why? Because the Kohathites’ job was to carry the holy things of the tabernacle on their shoulders, not on wagons pulled by oxen.

This passage teaches us an important lesson about God’s blessings: they are customized according to the mission He has given us. Just as Moses allocated resources based on the specific needs of each Levite family, so too does God bless us in accordance with the assignments He has entrusted to us.

Often, we may be tempted to covet what others have, especially when we see them receiving blessings or resources that we desire. However, we must remember that God’s blessings are tailor-made for the tasks He has called us to fulfill. What may be a blessing for someone else’s assignment may not be necessary or beneficial for ours.

Instead of coveting what others have, let us learn to embrace the unique mission and calling that God has placed on our lives. Let us trust that He knows exactly what we need to accomplish His purposes, and He will provide accordingly. Just as the Kohathites did not need wagons and oxen because their task required them to carry the holy things on their shoulders, so too may God withhold certain blessings from us because they are not essential for our specific calling.
