How We Can Have Peace That Is Beyond Understanding

Sometimes ago, one of my bible students asked this question “how can we really be calm even though everything around us is falling apart. How can we have that peace of God?” With the help of the holy spirit, I was able to put forward an illustration that I believe can serve as a timeless truth to us even today about the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

Imagine there are two young men, fresh graduates from the University both jobless broke and looking for something to do. Now, one of these two graduates lives in his father’s house in Lekki, while the other one is an orphan, living from house to house and most times under bridge. Nobody cares about him and of course, he didn’t care about anybody.

After a while, there are a few things that are likely to characterize the lives of these young graduates, while the first guy is looking for a job just like his orphan colleague, he won’t be under any pressure because he knows that until he gets a job and moves out of the house, his father will always take care of his basic needs. In fact, his father will probably join the search party in the job hunt.

The guy under the bridge, on the other hand, will be under a lot of pressure to take advantage of anything, he might even resort to a life of crime, snatching bags and probably settle for a job that will end up making his life miserable. Why? Because he doesn’t have the assurance of a father.

In the same way, when we understand that we have a father in heaven who cares for us, we will be at peace even though we have the same problem as every other person around us. Everybody in your office might be complaining that the money is too small but you know that your heavenly father is the one who will take care of you, not the salary. Everybody might be afraid they will fail based on the facts but you know that your father who controls the heart of the kings is in control.

You’re married but no child yet, other people with the same problem might be running from pillar to pole but the reality of the father’s love will help you sing like Don Moen:

“Though I may not understand, all the love you have for me,

My life in your hands and with the eyes of faith, I can clearly see,

God is good, all the time

Through the darkest night, His light will shine.

God is good, he’s so good, all the time”

When our eyes of faith is opened to the love of the father, we will realize his absolute power, his absolute wisdom, and his absolute love. We will begin to see things with God’s eye and when men are saying there’s a casting down, you’ll be saying ‘Nay, there is a lifting up!

May God open our eyes today and everyday so that we might understand his love, his wisdom, and his power everyday of our lives in Jesus name.

  • I love the analogy you used to drive home the fact that we are secure because we have a Heavenly Father. This picture is going to stick!
