In the Beginning, God…

I have always been fascinated by the works of inventors like Thomas Edison and geniuses like Albert Einstein. The creativity of being able to bring to existence what never existed is such a wonder to behold. As technology evolves, many more things are coming alive and sometimes we are lost in the fascination of creativity, and we forget they never would have existed if a baseline invention had not existed.

For instance, imagine if Edison never invented electricity, how would most of the current world-changing technologies be powered? Even your laptop battery requires electricity to store up energy.

An inventor or a creator is one who makes something new. People can “create” art projects, musical compositions, and physical structures; however, they always have something to work with. They begin with preexisting matter and form it in new ways. Even music and other intellectual creations have rhythms, rhymes, notes, instruments, and artistic mediums that provide structure and offer possibilities. What is commonly called “creativity” is more akin to synthesis.

However, there is only one inventor that truly created something out of nothing, he is God! God had no raw materials to work with. When we say that God is the Creator, we mean that He is truly creative, in a category all by Himself, because He started with nothing. Paul described it better in Colossians 1:16 when he said “…For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him..”

So, when Genesis 1:1 says that “in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” It means that, before Genesis 1:1, there existed no heavens and no earth. God spoke them into being (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9). “In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them” (Exodus 20:11; Revelation 10:6). He is God. He is not limited by our understanding, nor by time, space, or matter. As the Creator, God is the all-wise originator and designer of all things: “How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you made them all” (Psalm 104:24).

So, what does this mean for us today? As we step out today and you are appreciating the beauty of great technologies, fashions, architectural designs created by men, don’t forget there’s a great God who created those brains, those thinking faculties in the first, he (the creator) more than the inventors should be worshipped.

More importantly, when you need a source of inspiration for creativity you know where to look right? It all begins with God.
