Jesus Turned Water to Wine

and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.

John 2:9a

Today, we shall examine the first miracle of Jesus in Cana of Galilee. This miracle is unique among all the miracles of Jesus because, while we often see Him heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, and feed multitudes, here He turns water into wine. One might wonder, why would Jesus turn water into wine? That sounds very strange. Therefore, we will explore the implications of this miracle, beyond what the people saw that day.

We must understand that in their time, wine was a precious commodity. In fact, one of the offerings they brought to God, as mentioned in the Law, was new wine because God desires that we bring what is precious to us. Additionally, we must understand that the water turned into wine came from the bowls used for ceremonial washing. By implication, it wasn’t clean water, as it was used for washing feet. With this, we can say that “Jesus turned dirty water into the best wine ever.”

So, what are the implications we can draw from this? First, the miracle of Jesus points to a process of transformation. Also, note that this was the first miracle of Jesus, which signifies that the first thing Jesus does in the life of anyone is transformation. He transforms them from dirty water (the kingdom of darkness) into the best wine (the Kingdom of Light). This is what happens to everyone who is a child of God right now. We have been transformed from dirty water into the best wine. This is something only Jesus can do. There is no scientific explanation for how to transform dirty water into the best wine, and this is why people often cannot understand when believers say they are a new creation, that old things have passed away, and all things have become new. It is because such a person is no longer dirty water but has been transformed into new wine.

If you are reading this today and feel that you are too dirty, wondering what God can do with someone like you, believe me when I say there is no level you have reached that is beyond God’s ability to transform. Just come to Him today, confess your sins before Him, and believe that He can transform you. As you do this, believe that He has transformed you and that you have become a new wine—in fact, the best of wine.

PRAYER

Lord, I thank you for your transforming power in my life, picking me up from being a useless, dirty water and transforming me into the best wine. This truly is your grace over my life. Lord, help me to live each day always remembering this love that you have shown to me, and to express this love to others, so that their lives can be transformed
