Leading with Wisdom and Love

Key Verse: Nehemiah 5:7
“After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, ‘Each of you is exacting usury from his brother.’ So I called a great assembly against them.”

Leadership often means balancing a strong response with wisdom, and Nehemiah models this beautifully. Though deeply angered by the injustices among his people, he didn’t react impulsively. Instead, Nehemiah paused, gave the matter serious thought, and then acted. This pause wasn’t about avoiding the issue but ensuring that his response would be effective and God-honoring. His example reminds us that when anger stirs us—especially righteous anger over injustice—it’s wise to pause and let God guide our response rather than rushing in based on emotions alone.

Nehemiah’s approach also shows us the importance of courage in leadership. Even when the issue was with those of influence and power—the nobles and rulers—Nehemiah didn’t shrink back. Instead, he confronted them directly about the usury they were imposing on their own people, a violation of God’s law and a direct harm to their unity. Speaking truth to power takes courage, and Nehemiah was willing to risk his position to stand up for justice and unity. True leadership is not silent in the face of wrongdoing, even if it means confronting those in high places.

Another striking aspect of Nehemiah’s leadership was his ability to communicate truth in love. He wasn’t simply trying to make a point or cause division; his goal was to bring about change and restoration among God’s people. The people responded positively, and Nehemiah’s rebuke led to repentance and a commitment to correct the wrongs. When we speak with a heart for unity and truth, others are more likely to respond positively and see the need for change.

Nehemiah’s example reminds us that dealing with problems directly can lead to healing and growth. Avoiding conflict might feel easier, but it rarely produces the kind of change that honors God. When we handle issues thoughtfully, confront wrongdoing with courage, and speak truth in love, we can be agents of healing and restoration, whether in our homes, workplaces, or communities. Let’s remember to lead with both courage and wisdom, trusting that God will work through our actions for His glory.
