Learning to Read the Terrain

Be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” — Colossians 1:9 (KJV)

In survival training, one of the first things soldiers learn is how to read terrain. What looks like a peaceful clearing may be a kill zone. What looks like a safe path through the forest may lead into an ambush. The ability to read the environment, to see past what is surface and perceive what is strategic, is not a bonus skill. It is a survival requirement.

Spiritual discernment works the same way.

Paul prays in Colossians 1:9 that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. This is not a prayer for more Bible knowledge, though that matters. It is a prayer for the kind of perception that allows you to read what is really happening around you, beneath what is visible, behind what is obvious.

A brother I know in Nigeria discovered this the hard way. He stumbled upon documents at his office outlining how his bosses were systematically siphoning money from the company. When they invited him into the scheme and he refused because of his Christian convictions, his life became a nightmare almost overnight. Harassment, threats, deliberate sabotage of his work. He was on the verge of losing his job when something clicked. He was not in a conflict with his bosses. He was in a spiritual war. His bosses were not the enemy; they were instruments. The real conflict was between righteousness and iniquity, between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. And he had been living like someone on vacation in the middle of a battlefield.

The moment his spiritual eyes opened, his response completely changed. Instead of reacting, he prayed strategically. Instead of fighting people, he engaged the powers behind them. He stopped being destabilized by what was visible and started standing on what was true.

Discernment asks the questions that surface-level thinking cannot. Is this delay a coincidence or is there resistance from the enemy? Is this relationship draining my spirit or feeding my destiny? Is my lack of desire to pray just tiredness, or has the enemy numbed my appetite for God? Is this conflict really about what it appears to be about, or is there a deeper agenda at work?

You do not need to become suspicious of everyone or paranoid about everything. Discernment is not anxiety. It is clarity. It is the Holy Spirit giving you the ability to see past the surface into the spiritual reality beneath it. And like all spiritual gifts, it grows with use. The more you ask for it, the more you exercise it, and the sharper it becomes.

Today, bring one confusing or recurring situation in your life before God and ask Him for spiritual discernment. Ask Him to show you not just what is happening but what is behind it. Then sit quietly and listen. The Holy Spirit is not silent. He is waiting for you to ask.

Prayer

Father, give me eyes to see past the surface of my life. There are situations I have been reading at the wrong level, conflicts I have been engaging with the wrong tools, patterns I have been interpreting without your wisdom. Fill me with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Teach me to read terrain the way a soldier reads a battlefield: not with fear, but with clarity, not with suspicion, but with discernment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
