When Nehemiah set out to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, he didn’t try to make it a solo project or a personal triumph. Instead, he made it clear to the people that this was God’s project. Nehemiah had the wisdom to remind them that the favour of God was upon the work and that it wasn’t just a human ambition. He told them, “the hand of my God has been good upon me.” This encouragement was a reminder that the success of the rebuilding didn’t depend on Nehemiah’s skills, but on God’s divine guidance and support.
As leaders, one of the most crucial lessons we can learn from Nehemiah is to constantly point back to God. Whether we’re leading a ministry, a project at work, or even within our family, it’s easy to fall into the trap of making it about ourselves. When people sense that the vision we cast is about raising us up, they will be hesitant to commit. But when they know that the vision is God-given and that we’re working under His direction, they are more likely to partner with us and be motivated to see it succeed.
Nehemiah’s approach also teaches us that encouragement is rooted in faith. He didn’t just give the people a pep talk; he grounded his words in the reality of God’s ongoing work.. He shared how God had moved the heart of the Persian king and opened doors that made the project possible. When we encourage others, we must not just rely on empty words but point them to the reality of God’s work in our lives. This kind of leadership builds trust and confidence, reminding people that God is truly at the helm.
In our own lives, we can often face overwhelming tasks that feel too big for us to handle. Whether we are trying to rebuild broken relationships, revive a struggling ministry, or face a personal challenge, the key is to acknowledge that it’s not our project alone. Just like Nehemiah, we must encourage ourselves and others by remembering that the gracious hand of God is upon us. With His guidance, nothing is impossible.
Father, I thank You for Your hand upon my life and the work You have called me to accomplish. Remind me always that this vision and every effort I make are Yours and not my own. Grant me the grace to encourage others in Your strength, guiding them to see Your hand in every step we take. May my leadership reflect Your goodness, and may all that I do be for Your glory.
