Loved as Sons and Daughters

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

God’s love does not place us on probation. It places us in a family. The language of Scripture is intentional here, we are not described as hired servants trying to earn approval, but as sons and daughters who belong. Adoption means chosen, accepted, and given full access, not tolerated at a distance.

Many believers struggle to receive God’s love because they still relate to Him as slaves, not children. Slaves live in fear of punishment. Sons live in the security of belonging. Slaves obey to avoid consequences. Sons obey because of relationship. When Paul says we have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, he is pointing to a radical shift in identity. Fear is no longer the motivator. Love is.

Calling God “Abba” is not casual language. It is deeply intimate. It reflects trust, closeness, and safety. This is how God desires to be known, not merely as Creator or Judge, but as Father. His love is parental, patient, protective, and committed to growth. He does not discard His children when they stumble. He trains them, restores them, and walks with them.

The Spirit’s role is also important here. He bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Sonship is not just a doctrine to agree with, it is a reality the Holy Spirit continually affirms. When shame whispers that you do not belong, the Spirit reminds you that you do. When fear tries to dominate your prayers, the Spirit invites you to come boldly as a child.

Living as a son or daughter changes how you approach God. You pray differently. You repent differently. You trust differently. You rest differently. You no longer come to prove your worth. You come because you already belong.

You are not loved conditionally, no, you are loved unconditionally because you are a child of God.

Prayer
Father, thank you for loving me as your child and not treating me as a servant or stranger. Help me to live from the security of sonship and not from fear or striving. Let your Spirit continually remind my heart that I belong to you. Teach me to trust your love and walk confidently as your child. Amen.
