My Spirit Rejoices in God My Savior!

And Mary said My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour

Luke 1:46-47

Let’s sing a song today, shall we? Well, this song was composed by Sister Mary (or Saint Mary as some would prefer). Mary’s song has been titled ‘Magnificat’ because of the first word of the song which basically magnifies the Lord. In the opening part of the song, Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” (Luke 1: 46-47)

Wait a minute, Mary calls Jesus her Saviour? Interesting! There’s a reason God would probably not have chosen me to be the mother of Jesus. If I were Mary, I can assure you that I would not spare any occasion to let everyone know that my womb carried the Messiah. 

In fact, if I were Mary, why would I need a saviour anymore? The same saviour that came out of my loins? The one I nurtured when he was helpless as a baby? Forget it, I will immortalise myself as the pathway to reach the Saviour, it will become a law that if you want to see the Messiah you must pass through me. But that wasn’t what Mary did! Instead, she put her faith in the same child that she raised, trusting in God through him. It must have taken a lot for Mary to put her faith in the boy Jesus, a rare humility and an act of faith that is beyond imagination. 

However, it speaks to a bigger issue that Peter raised in Act 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among people by which we must be saved [for God has provided the world no alternative for salvation].” 

If Mary needed a Saviour, then we all do. No one can be closer to Jesus than Mary was yet, she said “My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” Why do we need a saviour? Well, the bible says in Romans 3:23 that “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Man in his natural state is helpless and doomed for destruction, no matter how much he tries, he will end in destruction. Isaiah couldn’t have put it better, “All of us like sheep have gone astray, We have turned, each one, to his own way; But the Lord has caused the wickedness of us all [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing] To fall on Him [instead of us] (Isaiah 53:6)

If you are reading this today and you are yet to receive the free gift of salvation from this saviour, there is no better time to ask him to come into your heart than now. And if you have received his Lordship already, let this be a reminder that God saved you from an inevitable eternal death; praise be to God our saviour forever.
