Nehemiah’s Prayer – Part 1: Worship in the Midst of Heartache

“Then I said: ‘Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments.’” – Nehemiah 1:5

When life hits hard, what is your first reaction? For many of us, it’s easy to get caught up in the weight of our emotions, frustrations, or fears. But Nehemiah gives us a powerful example of a different response. When he received the devastating news about the destruction of Jerusalem, his heart broke. Yet, before asking God for help, or even bringing up his pain, he began with worship. He acknowledged God as the “God of heaven, the great and awesome God.” Nehemiah understood something we often forget: no matter how heavy our burdens are, God remains worthy of our worship.

Worship isn’t just something we do when things are going well; It’s how we declare that God is still in control, even in our darkest moments. Nehemiah’s world was falling apart, but he started his prayer by lifting his eyes to God’s greatness. He reminded himself—and us—that God is bigger than any crisis we face. Worship re-centers our hearts, taking our focus off our circumstances and placing it on the One who rules over all.

How often do we let the weight of our situations silence our worship? In the face of loss, fear, or uncertainty, worship might feel like the last thing we want to do. But that’s precisely when we need it most. Worship is an act of faith, a declaration that we believe God is good and faithful, even when life seems anything but. Nehemiah worshiped a God who “keeps His covenant of love.” And just like Nehemiah, we can rest in the assurance that God is faithful to His promises, no matter what we are going through.

As we embark on this journey through Nehemiah’s prayer, let’s remember that worship is the foundation. Before we bring our requests or complaints to God, we must first acknowledge who He is. Worship strengthens our faith and shifts our perspective. When we start with worship, we invite God to reign over our situation and remind ourselves that He is always in control.
