Nehemiah’s Prayer – Part 3: Praying God’s Promises

“Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’” – Nehemiah 1:8-9

Have you ever made a promise, only to be reminded of it later by someone else? While it might feel frustrating for us as humans, God welcomes this kind of conversation. In fact, Nehemiah shows us a powerful way to pray by reminding God of His promises. When Nehemiah cried out to God, he didn’t just pray from his emotions or the dire state of Jerusalem—he prayed based on God’s Word. He quoted from Leviticus and Deuteronomy, reminding God of His promise to restore His people if they returned to Him.

This isn’t about forcing God’s hand or twisting His arm. It’s about aligning our prayers with His will. Nehemiah wasn’t making demands; he was simply praying what God had already spoken. He had faith that God’s promises were true and could be relied upon, even in the darkest moments. That’s the beauty of praying God’s Word. It shifts our focus from what we think we need to what God has already said He will do. When we plead God’s promises, we are praying His will, and that’s where true power in prayer is found.

So how do we take this example into our own lives? The first step is to spend time in God’s Word. If we’re not familiar with what God has promised, how can we bring those promises into our prayers? Scripture is full of God’s faithfulness, His plans, and His desires for us. When we pray from the foundation of His Word, our prayers carry the weight of His truth. It’s like a child going to the father and saying, “Daddy, you promised.” And rather than being annoyed, God delights in fulfilling His promises to us.

If you want your prayer life to grow in power and effectiveness, start by digging into the Scriptures. Find the promises that speak to your situation and bring them before God in faith. He is faithful to His Word, and there is nothing more powerful than praying in line with what He has already promised.
