No Favouritism Allowed

“My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.” – James 2:1 (NIV)

Imagine walking into church and noticing that someone in designer clothes is given a warm welcome and the best seat, while someone in worn-out jeans is ignored or ushered to the back. James says: not in the family of Christ. Favouritism doesn’t just create division-it contradicts the very nature of our faith. The gospel declares that all people, regardless of wealth, race, status, or style, are equal at the foot of the cross.

Jesus, the “glorious Lord” James speaks of, didn’t play favorites. He touched the untouchable, dined with the outcast, and welcomed the sinner. If we truly follow Him, our hearts will begin to look like His-wide open to all people, not just those who “look the part.” Favoritism may feel subtle, even harmless at times, but it reveals a dangerous tendency to value people by appearance rather than essence.

Let’s be honest-we all carry hidden biases. We gravitate toward people who are like us, who we admire, or who can benefit us. But the kingdom of God runs on a different currency: grace. And grace doesn’t play favorites. It loves generously and honors every human being as an image-bearer of God. When we treat others with equal dignity, we reflect the character of Christ more clearly.

So today, look around. Who are you quick to welcome-and who do you tend to overlook? Ask God to soften your heart, break down bias, and help you love without partiality. In a world full of cliques and categories, the church should be a place where everyone is treated like family.

Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve shown favouritism-whether knowingly or not. Teach me to see people as you do, with eyes of grace and hearts of compassion. Help me reflect your love to everyone I meet, without judgment or prejudice. Amen.
