“Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning.” — Isaiah 46:9-10 (ESV)
The best training for trusting God’s providence in the future is reviewing His providence in the past.
This is why Isaiah invites Israel to remember. Not just to be grateful for what has already happened but to use it as evidence for what is still coming. The God who declared the end from the beginning in the past situations of your life is the same God who is at work in the present situation. The track record is the training ground for faith.
Think back through your life with the lens we have spent this month developing. The lens of the book of Esther. Look at the seasons that were most confusing while you were in them. The doors that closed. The relationships that ended. The plans that did not work out. The seasons where God’s name seemed conspicuously absent from what was happening. And then look at what those seasons produced. What was being positioned. What was being protected. What was being prepared.
Most people, when they look back with enough distance and honesty, can identify at least one season that they now understand differently than they did when they were in it. One period where the invisible hand was doing something they could not see at the time. One set of circumstances that, in retrospect, was clearly coordinated toward an outcome that would not have been possible without all of those specific details falling into place.
That season is your personal book of Esther. That is the chapter of your story where God’s name was missing from the events but His fingerprints were on every page. And the God who wrote that chapter is the same God who is writing the chapter you are in right now.
Today, take time to trace the providential arc of your own past. Not to live there but to be equipped by it. The God who moved then has not changed. The invisible hand that was at work in your history is at work in your present.
Father, as I look back at the chapters of my life, help me to see your hand in the places where I thought you were absent. Build my faith for the present by showing me the past. You declared the end from the beginning then. You are doing the same now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
