Preparing for Battle: Trusting in God, Not the Flesh

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, ‘Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.

— Joshua 5:2

Imagine standing on the brink of war, ready to conquer cities like Jericho and many others. The Israelites were at the threshold of their promised land, poised to face immense battles. In the Christian life, blessings and battles often come hand in hand. The greater the blessing, the greater the struggle against the powers of darkness. Only those who press deeply into God can secure His best.

Before the Israelites could engage in war, God commanded Joshua to circumcise the men. This command might seem counterintuitive, as it would physically weaken them just before a significant military campaign.

Circumcision, while having hygienic benefits, was primarily a spiritual act. It symbolized the cutting away of the flesh, a reminder that their trust should not be in human strength but in God. For the Israelites, undergoing circumcision before battle was an act of obedience and faith, signaling their dependence on God rather than their own abilities. In a moment that demanded physical readiness, they were called to a spiritual preparation that required vulnerability and trust in God’s timing and strength.

This teaches us a profound lesson: true victory is found not in our fleshly efforts but in our reliance on God. The act of circumcision weakened the Israelites temporarily but fortified their spiritual resolve. It was a covenantal sign that they belonged to God and that their success depended on His power, not their own. Similarly, as we face our own battles and challenges, we must undergo a “circumcision of the heart,” allowing God to cut away anything that hinders our full trust in Him.

In our spiritual journey, we must submit ourselves to God’s refining process. This might mean surrendering our own plans, strengths, and understanding to fully rely on Him. The battles we face are not won by our might but by His Spirit. Just as the Israelites had to trust God’s plan and timing, we too must trust that God knows best and will equip us for the battles ahead.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, Thank you for reminding me that true victory comes from relying on you, not on my own strength. As I face the battles in my life, help me to submit to your refining process. Circumcise my heart, cutting away anything that hinders my full trust in you. Strengthen my faith and help me to remember that you are my source of strength and victory. Guide me to press deeply into you, knowing that in your hands, I will find success and blessing.
