Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran. They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses.
Numbers 10:12-13
Imagine a man looking at his face in the mirror, he finds a big dirt on his shirt, gets upset and instead of cleaning it or changing the cloth he enters his car and sets out for an important occasion. Now at the event, everyone is looking at him like an unserious person; who do we blame? Himself of course! Yet that is exactly how we respond to the word of God sometimes. We learn it, know it but we never do it.
In contrast, in Numbers 10:11-36, we see the Israelites putting into practice the organizational instructions that God had given them earlier in Numbers 2. As they prepared to journey to the Promised Land, they followed the structured arrangements for relocation and transportation of the tabernacle.
This passage serves as a powerful reminder that God’s instructions are not merely for knowledge or information—they are meant to be put into action when the time comes. Just as the Israelites had learned the organization of their camp and the order of their movement, they were now called upon to implement what they had been taught.
Similarly, in our lives today, God’s Word provides us with instructions, guidance, and wisdom for every situation we may encounter. However, it is not enough to simply know or understand God’s commands; we must be willing to put them into practice when the time comes.
The apostle James writes, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing” (James 1:22-25, ESV).
Just as the Israelites were blessed in their obedience to God’s instructions, so too will we experience God’s blessings when we faithfully put His Word into practice in our lives. Whether it is obeying His commands, following His guidance, or living out the principles of His kingdom, our obedience demonstrates our love for God and our trust in His wisdom and sovereignty.
As we reflect on the structured nature of the Israelites’ movement and their obedience to God’s instructions, let’s be inspired to do likewise in our own lives. Let us commit ourselves to being not just hearers of God’s Word, but doers as well, ready to obey His commands and follow His leading wherever He may call us.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the wisdom and guidance found in your Word. Help me to be a doer of your word, not just a hearer, that I may walk in obedience to your commands and experience your blessings in my life. Give me the strength and courage to put your instructions into practice, trusting in your wisdom and sovereignty. Let my life be a reflection of your truth and love, bringing glory to your name.
