Rahab’s Risky Faith

“In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?” – James 2:25 (NIV)

Rahab’s name doesn’t sound like the name of a faith hero. She was a Gentile. She was a prostitute. She was an outsider. And yet, James highlights her in the same breath as Abraham. Why? Because when push came to shove, she chose faith. She hid the Israelite spies, risking her life in the process, because she believed in the power of Israel’s God more than the authority of her king.

Rahab’s story teaches us that faith isn’t always safe or tidy. Sometimes it looks like a messy decision to follow God when it could cost you everything. She had no guarantee the spies would keep their promise to protect her. But she chose to act on the little she knew of God-and that was enough. Her faith moved her to courage, and her courage led to salvation-not just for her, but for her entire household.

So often, we want a faith that’s comfortable-one that fits neatly into our schedules and doesn’t stretch us too much. But real faith takes risks. It says “yes” to God when it’s unpopular. It stands for truth when it would be easier to blend in. It sacrifices, obeys, and dares to believe that God is greater than the fear that tries to hold us back.

Where is God calling you to take a risk in faith today? Maybe it’s a conversation you’re scared to have, a step of generosity, or a bold act of obedience. Follow Rahab’s lead. You don’t need a perfect record-just a willing heart and a reverent fear of God.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for Rahab’s example of bold, risky faith. Help me to fear you more than I fear people. Give me the courage to take steps that align with your will, even when it’s hard. Let my faith move me to action, and let my trust in you grow deeper every day. Amen.
