Remembering What God Has Done

We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.

Rahab’s confession reveals the profound impact of remembering and recounting the mighty works of God. Her faith was kindled by the stories she heard about God’s miraculous deliverance of Israel from Egypt and their victories over powerful enemies. These accounts not only inspired Rahab’s faith but also instilled fear in the hearts of the people of Jericho. They believed in the power of Israel’s God because they had heard of His mighty deeds.

Ironically, the Israelites, who were first hand witnesses to these miracles, were often plagued by fear and doubt. They struggled to trust God fully, despite the incredible signs and wonders He had performed in their midst. This disconnect stemmed from their failure to continually meditate on and remember God’s past faithfulness. When faced with new challenges, they forgot how God had already proven His power and faithfulness.

As believers today, we can learn a valuable lesson from this contrast. The same stories of God’s deliverance and provision that strengthened Rahab’s faith and terrified her people should remind us of God’s unfailing power and faithfulness. When we face difficulties and uncertainties, we must make it a practice to recall God’s past victories in our lives. By meditating on His goodness, we can find the strength and courage to face future battles.

Remembering God’s past faithfulness helps us to trust Him more deeply and walk in confidence. Just as Rahab’s faith was ignited by hearing about God’s mighty acts, our faith can be strengthened by recalling and meditating on His goodness. Let us make it a habit to recount God’s deeds, both in the scriptures and in our personal lives, so that we may be fortified for whatever lies ahead.
