Revealing the Glory of God

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

John 2:11

Over the next few days, we will be examining the miracles of Jesus recorded in the Book of John and their significance. Often, when God performs miracles in our lives, around us, or even in the ones we read about, we see them merely as expressions of God’s power—to heal, deliver, help, and so on. While this is indeed wonderful, we must never limit God in the ways He expresses Himself. Our goal over these few days is to look beyond the visible miracle and discern what else God is pointing our attention toward. In John 2:11, the Apostle John says, “What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.” Note that he uses the word ‘signs’ and not ‘miracles.’ This is because the miracles Jesus performed were signs pointing to something beyond what was obvious to everyone.

Over the next few days, I encourage you to take some time to remember the miracles you have seen God do in your life and meditate on them to discern what God is trying to say to you through them. There is always a message in every miracle God performs.

Sometime in 2023, I had to undergo minor surgery. It seemed like a very small thing—I was supposed to just go in on the day of the surgery, be done in less than an hour, rest a bit, and be good to go. So, I went in with no extra preparation. However, I ended up spending a week in the hospital because I almost died, and the doctors were clueless about what was going on. They were surprised I pulled through. But what struck one of the doctors most was my attitude. Even though I was in so much pain and they were looking at me with uncertainty, I remained calm because I knew that I couldn’t die.

After all this happened, I wondered why I had to get so close to death before God saved me. Then He showed me that it wasn’t about me; it was to show the doctors that the life of anyone is beyond their control. One of the doctors told me some weeks later, when I came in for a follow-up, that she had never met anyone like me before, and she was amazed at how calm I was despite their confusion. I told her that I knew I could not die and that God was going to save me. She didn’t know what else to say. For me, this was what God was trying to do. Beyond that, God was also showing me that all things work together for good for those who love Him. It was a powerful message for me, especially as I wondered why God made me go through that stress and spend so much during that period.

So, you see, miracles are not just what they appear to be; they are signs from God, intended to convey a message to us and to those involved.
