God sent birds to bring Elijah his meals.
Not just any birds. Ravens. In the Jewish law, ravens were unclean animals. They were scavengers, associated with death and desolation. They were precisely the category of creature a faithful Jew would not have considered a fit vehicle for divine provision, which may be exactly why God chose them. The provision that arrived for Elijah at the brook Cherith came through channels that no religious sensibility would have selected and no logistical strategy would have designed, and it came faithfully, twice a day, morning and evening, for as long as Elijah needed it.
Think about the provision in your own life that has come through channels you would never have designed or chosen. The job that came through a relationship you nearly did not make. The financial help that arrived from a direction you did not expect, from a person or an organisation you would never have thought to approach. The opportunity that appeared through what seemed like an embarrassing circumstance rather than an impressive one. The message that found you through an unlikely source at exactly the right moment. These are ravens. God is not limited to respectable supply chains.
The brook Cherith eventually dried up. When it did, God simply gave Elijah new instructions: go to Zarephath, where there is a widow who will supply you with food. The provision did not dry up when the brook did. The brook was just the current vehicle. God’s provision is not attached to any particular channel; it is attached to His own character and His own promise to sustain what He has called. When one channel is removed, He opens another. The faithfulness is in the supply, not in the method of delivery.
I think about my own story in this light. The school fees settled on the final day did not always come from the same direction twice. The strangers who pressed provision into my hands were never the same strangers. The favour that opened doors arrived through different people in different seasons. The common element across every provision was not the channel but the One who was sending it, who apparently has no shortage of ravens available when the situation requires unconventional delivery methods.
Today, examine whether you have been limiting your expectation of provision to the channels you consider appropriate or likely. God may have ravens in your neighbourhood that you have been dismissing as unlikely sources. Expand your expectation to include every channel God has available, which is to say: all of them.
Ask God to send whatever He will through whoever He chooses, and commit to recognising the provision regardless of the beak it arrives in.
Father, expand my expectation of how you can provide. I have been waiting for provision through the channels I consider likely, while you may have ravens circling overhead that I have been dismissing as improbable. Open my eyes to every channel of provision you have available. Send what you will through whoever you choose. I will receive it as faithfully as Elijah received it from the ravens.
