Well, one of the skills I set out to learn in 2020 is the design skill. At some point, I was almost thinking it won’t be possible but the COVID-19 house arrest gave me some extra time and I turned to Youtube. One of the things I learned as part of the fundamentals is the principle of zooming in and zooming out.
When you have an image on the screen, to make it bigger so that you can see more hidden details you need to zoom in, as you zoom-in however, at some point the image begins to pixelate (meaning becoming blurry), at that point the only way to appreciate the beauty of the image is to zoom-out.
When you zoom out the image becomes more beautiful but with some hidden details. The best practice is to always find a mid-point where there are sufficient details but with the dignity of the image still in place.
As believers, we hold the beauty of the truth of the scripture in our hands everyday, and dividing this truth is like a creative designer trying his skill to make the best image that best communicates his message to the world.
Sometimes people take a verse of the scripture and analyze it to a point where the essence of the study is lost in the first place. I remember sitting under a minister once, the speaker in trying to explain a verse of the scripture took us through several other chapters and verses until we returned more confused than before embarking on the journey.
The only thing I ended up learning was the many commentaries he ran as we moved from scripture to scripture. I ended up not edified.
I have also seen people taking verses of the scripture out of context and supplementing it with personal stories and other tales from moonlight until the scripture is entirely taken out of context and we start asking ourselves, ‘how did we get here?’ When you overstretch the truth, if you’re not careful you may end up either confusing the hearers or conclude in error.
We must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit as we expand the scriptures unto men so that in wisdom we will be like a skillful graphics designer who zooms the image just enough to expose the necessary truths and maintain the balance of the image less it becomes distorted.
May God grant us wisdom so that the truth of God may prosper in our hands in Jesus name.
