Standing Firm Against Slander

Nehemiah 6:6

“In it was written: ‘It is reported among the nations—and Geshem says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king.'”

Slander is one of the enemy’s sharpest tools, often aimed at undermining our character and motives. When Nehemiah’s enemies failed to distract him with “peaceful” meetings, they turned to another weapon: false accusation. Sanballat’s letter, filled with vague accusations, claimed Nehemiah had ambitions to make himself king and that his work on the wall was merely a path to rebellion. Nehemiah’s steadfast response teaches us that sometimes, when the enemy’s initial distractions fail, he turns up the pressure with lies designed to cause us to stumble.

It’s notable how slander often uses vague terms like “people are saying” or “everyone thinks,” which can create a sense of widespread belief, even when based on nothing substantial. Sanballat’s approach was no different, and the lie was designed to harm Nehemiah’s reputation and question his motives. However, Nehemiah knew that a popular lie does not equal truth. Nehemiah had consistently shown integrity, even sacrificing his personal comfort and gain to focus on God’s work. He stood his ground, recognizing the attack for what it was.

The enemy often knows which accusations will sting the most. Like Nehemiah, we may be most tempted to defend ourselves against lies that contradict our true intentions or imply selfish motives where we’ve sacrificed most. But Nehemiah responded with confidence, knowing his integrity before God was his shield. His steady trust in God’s purpose provided the resilience to stay focused and not be diverted by false accusations.

Learning from Nehemiah, we can refuse to engage with the enemy’s lies and recognize that God alone knows our hearts. It’s a reminder that when we’re doing a great work for God, we will face opposition. But through faith and a clear sense of purpose, we can rise above slander. The enemy will not win when our identity and calling are firmly rooted in God.
