Stick With the Promise

Key Verse:
“And Abraham said to God, ‘Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!’ Then God said: ‘No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.’” – Genesis 17:18–19 (NKJV)

Everyone loves a good backup plan. It feels smart and responsible to have a plan B or C just in case plan A fails. We do it all the time. We pick careers “just in case” our dreams do not work out, save money “just in case” things go wrong, and sometimes even choose relationships “just in case” God takes too long. But what if our fallback plans are actually proof that we have fallen back in faith?

That was Abraham’s struggle. After years of waiting, he had Ishmael and thought, “Maybe this is what God meant.” When God repeated His promise, Abraham said, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You.” In other words, “God, can’t You just bless my plan instead?” How often do we do the same? We create something on our own and then ask God to endorse it. We call it wisdom, but God calls it unbelief. Thankfully, His mercy is greater than our mistakes.

God did bless Ishmael, but He made it clear that His covenant would only come through Isaac. He will never replace His plan with ours, no matter how reasonable our plan seems. Fear creates shortcuts, but faith stays the course. If God gave the promise, He already has the power and timing to fulfill it. We do not need to make alternative arrangements to “help” Him.

Beloved, do not let fear push you into building a substitute for what God has promised. Your plan might work, but it will never carry His covenant. Trust Him and wait. When the promise finally comes, you will see that His plan was worth the wait and that no time was truly lost.

Prayer:
Father, forgive me for the times I have created my own plans instead of trusting yours. Help me to wait patiently for your timing and to resist the urge to take matters into my own hands. Strengthen my faith to believe that your plan is perfect and your promise will never fail. In Jesus’ name, amen.
