The Father’s Love and Our Response

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” – Matthew 3:17 (NKJV)

In Matthew 3:17, God declares to Jesus, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The first part of this verse, “This is My beloved Son,” highlights the Father’s immense love for His Son. It reflects God’s heart of love and care, showing how deeply He cherishes His Son and all of His children. God’s love is unconditional, and it is the Father’s responsibility to love, nurture, and bless His children.

However, the second part of the verse, “…in whom I am well pleased,” shifts the focus to the son’s response to the Father’s love. It speaks to our responsibility as children of God to live in a way that brings pleasure to our Heavenly Father. While the Father’s love is unconditional, our response to that love-our consecration, obedience, and desire to please Him-is what pleases Him.

Isaiah 42:1 reinforces this idea: “Behold My servant, whom I uphold; My elect, in whom My soul delights; I have put My Spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.” God’s delight in Jesus was not just in His identity as His Son but in how He fulfilled His mission in obedience to the Father. Similarly, we are called to be conformed to the image of Jesus so that, when God looks at us, He can say, “This is My beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus, while in heaven, was already the beloved Son. But it wasn’t until He stepped out of heaven, entering the world to fulfill His purpose, that God publicly declared His pleasure in Him. This is the challenge for us as believers. Our relationship with the Father begins with His love, but it must progress into fulfilling the purpose of that relationship-pleasing the Father with our lives, obedience, and consecration.

As we grow in our faith, we are called not only to accept the Father’s love but to respond by living in a way that pleases Him. It’s not enough to have a relationship with God; we must seek to fulfill His purposes and bring joy to His heart through our actions, choices, and consecration.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your deep love for me. I acknowledge that your love for me is unconditional and that you have called me to be your child. Help me to live in a way that brings you pleasure, just as Jesus did. Help me to move beyond simply having a relationship with you to fulfilling the purpose of that relationship by pleasing you in all I do. I desire to be a son who brings you joy and honor.
