The Power of a Teachable Heart

Nehemiah 5:12

“So they said, ‘We will give it back. And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.’”

Nehemiah’s leadership shines in this moment as he confronts his fellow Jews with truth and love. When he exposed the injustice of their actions—charging high interest and enslaving their own people—the wealthy leaders could have become defensive or dismissed him. Instead, they responded with humility, saying, “We will give it back.” They agreed to return what they had taken and even promised to do better in the future. Their willingness to listen and change course reflects a spirit that is truly teachable, a heart open to correction.

How often are we open to correction, especially when it involves something as sensitive as money or reputation? Many people find it challenging to admit their mistakes, fearing embarrassment or loss. But Nehemiah’s courage to speak honestly and their courage to listen shows us the beauty of a community built on love and mutual accountability. When we allow ourselves to be corrected, God is glorified, and we grow spiritually. In a culture that often promotes self-interest, we are called to embrace humility and a teachable heart, even in matters that cost us.
