The Practicality of Faith

 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1

How can we talk about faith without mentioning Hebrews 11. Among many other things, this scripture reveals the practical aspects of faith: the evidence of things hoped for and the substance of things not seen. These two elements of faith come through a process. This process is not instant, but requires continuous action that leads to results. When we understand the components of this process, we can better embrace and work through it.

First, faith is continuous. As Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing…” and this hearing does not stop. You cannot reach a point where you say you have acquired all the faith you need and no longer need to hear God’s Word. Faith continues to grow as we keep hearing and absorbing His promises.

Next, faith follows a set process. It’s a chain of connected events where each step matters. Just as in Isaiah 1:19, if we are willing but not obedient, or obedient but lacking willingness, we miss out on the fullness of God’s promise. Each part of the process must happen for the result to be complete.

Actions are essential in faith. Faith requires us to act—not just wish. Peter’s step out onto the water was an action of faith (Matthew 14:22-29). Faith is not passive; it’s active. It demands movement in line with God’s Word.

Faith must also be performed openly. It’s not enough to just desire or plan to act; we must carry it out openly, just as Jesus spoke to the fig tree in Mark 11:14. Our faith is demonstrated through what we do.

Being intentional in faith is also crucial. Faith is not about waiting for feelings or the Holy Spirit’s prompt; it’s about starting deliberately, as seen in Mark 2:1-5. You take the initiative to exercise your faith with purpose and action.

There is always a goal to be accomplished by faith. Results are not random, but intentional. Hebrews 12:2 speaks of a goal we are moving toward. Faith produces results that are different from natural outcomes. Faith’s results are rooted in God’s power and cannot be undone by the devil. They are permanent and unshakable.

The life of faith requires commitment to a process, but the results are always worth it.

Father, thank you for teaching me the practical steps of faith. help me to remain consistent in hearing your Word, intentional in my actions, and faithful through every step of the process. I pray that my faith will lead to lasting results that bring glory to your name. Strengthen me as I take steps of faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
