The Shepherds’ Joy and God’s Glory

“And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” — Luke 2:20 (NIV)

When God chose to announce the birth of His Son, He didn’t reveal it to scholars or leaders but to humble shepherds. These unlikely recipients of the greatest news highlight God’s ways, which are often beyond human understanding. The shepherds’ involvement points us to profound truths about God’s character and His plans.

God revealed Jesus’ birth to the shepherds to showcase His values. As Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 1:27-28, God uses what is weak, lowly, and despised to shame the strong and wise. The religious leaders may have considered themselves above reproach, yet God chose shepherds to proclaim His Son’s birth. This was not to shame them in their own eyes, but to demonstrate that God’s standards transcend worldly status.

The announcement also brought great joy to the shepherds. The angel’s message in Luke 2:10-11 was personal: “For unto you is born this day… a Savior.” The joy wasn’t just in the birth of a baby but in the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah. This joy, initially directed to the shepherds, extends to all who recognize the Savior. If you have received the gift of salvation, remember that this divine revelation is a source of profound, undeserved joy.

God’s message to the shepherds also encouraged Mary and Joseph. While both had angelic encounters foretelling Jesus’ birth, the shepherds’ testimony confirmed their experiences. Mary treasured their words in her heart, finding comfort in God’s affirmation of their calling. Similarly, God often provides signs of His grace to reassure us, even when we’ve already committed to His will.

Ultimately, God’s revelation to the shepherds was for His own glory. Their joy overflowed in praise, and everyone who heard their testimony marveled. God delights in glorifying Himself by bringing joy to His people. As Ephesians 1 reminds us, salvation itself is “to the praise of His glory.” The shepherds’ response challenges us: are we glorifying God with the same joy and passion this Christmas?

As we enter a new year, let’s remember that God works for our joy and benefit, but ultimately for His glory. May our lives reflect the wonder and gratitude of the shepherds as we glorify and praise Him for the gift of Jesus.
