The sower, The Seed, and The Soil

A farmer went out to sow his seed…

Luke 8:5

The parable of the sower is one parable that never ceases to amaze me. It’s interesting how all the three gospels recorded this parable and my guess is that it must have been really important to Jesus. 

What is the parable about? Here’s a summary: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he  was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” (Luke 8:5-8)

Interestingly, when Jesus explains the parable, the sower is identified as the one who spreads the seed which is the word of God. The Gospels don’t explicitly say this, but some interpretations suggest it’s God. While the Bible doesn’t confirm this, we can appreciate the sower’s generosity.

Why? If the sower only cared about abundance, they’d focus solely on the good soil. Sowing on the path, rocky ground, and thorns seems deliberate. The same word is used for all the sowing actions, suggesting intentionality. Despite the different conditions, the sower gives each seed a chance because it carries the potential for life.

God’s word still works the same way today. It doesn’t discriminate against anyone; from the hypocrites to sinners to saints. The word of God comes to us all. The word came to Pharaoh despite his hard heart, his destruction wasn’t the absence of God’s word but a personal choice. 

What about you? Perhaps God’s word came to you before, but distractions took it away. Maybe it sparked initial growth but got choked by life’s worries. Regardless of what happened, God’s mercy endures, and the word may be reaching you again. This time, will you be receptive?
