Wait for the Harvest Time

 ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.“

Yesterday, we began looking at another parable about seeds and sowing. This time, Jesus focuses on how the enemy reacts when the seed is sown. We examined the enemy’s strategy yesterday: coming while the man sleeps and sabotaging the seed. Today, we’ll explore God’s strategy.

When the farmer’s servants noticed weeds growing among the good seeds, they alerted their master to this troubling situation. The master explained it was the enemy’s doing. Filled with zeal, they asked, “Should we go and uproot these weeds?” The master replied, “No.” Why? Because while removing the weeds, they might accidentally uproot the wheat as well.. 

What then is God’s strategy? Look at verse 30 ”Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13‬:‭30‬). Did you notice that what he was asking them to do at harvest, was exactly the same thing they wanted to do in the first place? So why wait till harvest? It is to give the real plant a chance to grow.

For God, our growth surpasses the importance of thwarting the enemy’s work. Growth fosters a clear identity. As we mature spiritually, our true selves become evident, separating us from the weeds. Consequently, when the time for God’s judgement arrives, we can be spared. Judgement signifies a separation. The issue arises when we refuse to grow. Our way of life then becomes indistinguishable from those who will be judged. This reality makes it difficult for God to enact judgement. The most merciful solution, then, is for God to guide us towards surpassing the criteria for judgement before it happens. This exemplifies the artistry of God’s mercy.

That mercy of God is calling out to you again today saying, ‘it’s time to grow up’. Growing up is how we give God permission to implement His strategy against the enemy in our lives.  Remember, “…we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete” (2 Corinthians 10:6).
