When the Sun Gets Hot

“But the rich should take pride in their humiliation-since they will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.” – James 1:10–11 (NIV)

On a warm spring day, wildflowers bloom with stunning beauty-vibrant, fresh, and full of life. But let the sun rise higher and hotter, and before long, those same flowers are wilted and gone. James uses this vivid image to describe the reality of wealth: it’s here today, gone tomorrow. Money and material success may look dazzling in the moment, but they can’t stand the heat of life’s trials-or the certainty of time.

That’s a tough truth in a world where success is measured by square footage, brand names, and net worth. But James says the rich should take pride in their humiliation-not in a self-deprecating way, but in the awareness that earthly riches don’t last. When the pressure is on, when the economy dips, when life shifts, wealth won’t keep you rooted. Only your relationship with God will.

Maybe you’ve felt the heat recently-the pressure of financial insecurity, or the realization that the things you once thought would bring stability haven’t delivered. James invites us to shift our confidence. It’s not wrong to have money, but it’s dangerous to trust in it. What lasts isn’t your bank balance, but your obedience, humility, and hope in Christ.

So when the sun gets hot-when trials come or when success tempts you to drift-remember the wildflower. Bloom in grace, but root yourself in eternity. Build treasure that won’t burn away when the heat is on.

Lord, help me not to trust in riches, but in you. Teach me to value what lasts and to hold loosely what fades. In times of plenty or pressure, let me stay rooted in your love and grounded in your truth. Amen.
