Why Do You Keep Calling Me ‘Lord’?

So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say

When we had our first son in 2018, we were overjoyed and immediately began acknowledging him as a son and treating him as such. On the other hand, even though he enjoyed all the benefits of being our son without working for them, he hadn’t even acknowledged us as his parents yet.

As years went by, he could speak and call us Daddy and Mummy, but even then, he barely knew the implication of those words. He called me Daddy, yet when I asked him to do something, he did the exact opposite. Yet, I wasn’t angry. I knew that if he knew better, he would do better.

By the time he was five years old, things began to change. This time, he knew what it meant that I am his Dad: It meant that I love him, that I care about him, that I know more than him, and because of that, I give him instructions which are a reflection of my love. They may sometimes not be convenient for him, but he will obey them because Daddy says so. Sometimes he asks for explanations and he gets answers, while on some days the nature of the training behind the instruction will necessitate not giving him an explanation but asking him to simply obey out of trust. This is how true growth is measured, bringing joy to every parent.

In a similar way, when we give our lives to Christ, we become a part of his family not because of anything we have done but by His own will. Christ becomes our Lord, and for some time we may confess his Lordship and still struggle in our Christian walk. But true maturity is being able to come to a point of understanding that what it truly means for Christ to be our Lord is that we must submit to Him absolutely in all things. We cannot keep calling him ‘Lord, Lord!’ when we don’t do what He says.

Why is it so hard to obey God and submit to him? It all comes down to first accepting God’s infinite wisdom, power, and love. When we know that God loves us infinitely, we will know that whatever instruction He is giving us is for our good in the end. When we understand that God is infinitely wise, we will know that His ways are always right, and following any other path, however good it looks, can never be better. Above all, knowing that God is infinitely powerful gives us the confidence that He has all the resources needed to help us better than anyone in the world can. This is true maturity, this is real faith: to acknowledge God as God by doing everything he commands us. Are you ready to truly call him Lord?
