Young Man I say to You Rise!

“Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”

Luke 7:14

Yesterday, we started looking into the story of the death of a widow’s son in Nain. We also saw the compassionate intervention of Jesus beginning with his heart going out to the widow, then he brought her some comfort by his words when he said ‘don’t cry!’ We concluded by saying that in our loss, pain or grief, Jesus not only empathises or brings comfort, he also restores. 

The Bible tells us that he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” (Luke 7:14-16)

In the face of death, Jesus revealed His dominion over the grave. The young man, once lifeless, sat up and began to talk—a testimony to the limitless power inherent in our Saviour. It is a proclamation that reverberates through the ages, inviting us to have faith in a God who transcends the boundaries of the seen and the understood.

Death is often thought of in our world as a statement of finality. If a man is sick, we try everything to bring them back to good health but the moment they close their eyes in death, all hope is lost. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to embrace a faith that reaches beyond the confines of our comprehension. The resurrection power displayed in Nain is not just about raising the dead, it is a statement of hope for every situation—the assurance that with God, nothing is impossible.

The resurrection at Nain is a wake up call for us not to limit God or our expectations based on what we perceive as final. God’s power to bring life from death extends beyond the physical realm—it encompasses the restoration of broken dreams, relationships, and spirits. It’s time to speak to those dead things in your life, command them to come back to life.
