Your Son Will Live

“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

John 4:50a

Yesterday, we examined the first miracle of Jesus—turning water into wine—and we saw how the transforming power of Jesus can change our lives. No matter how bad your life may seem, it is never beyond the power of Jesus to transform and make you the best version of yourself that He created you to be.

Today, we shall examine the second miracle in the Book of John, which involves the healing of an official’s son. Here, we see this man, most likely a Roman official, coming to Jesus on behalf of his son. The first thing this expresses is a father’s love. This man was willing to go to Jesus, which wasn’t an acceptable thing in his time. But because he believed that Jesus could heal his son, he went to Him, not minding what anyone would say. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to Him and begged Him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

In response, Jesus said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.” Jesus alluded to the fact that the things He does are signs, and the main purpose of these signs is for people to believe. So, once again, I say to you, whatever you see Jesus do in your life, the end goal is for you to believe in Him, because He is always revealing something about Himself. It’s an opportunity to know Him more.

The official then made a request to Jesus to come and heal his son. But Jesus responded, “Go, your son will live.”

Let’s take a moment to reflect on this. We began the Book of John with the understanding that we want to know God, and the One who reveals God is ‘The Word,’ which is the source of life (John 1:4). The first lesson we learn from this man is that he wanted life for his son, and the person he came to was Jesus. This teaches us something that should always resonate in our lives and raises a question: “How many times have we sought life from other things?” We go through life seeking so many things, believing that if only we could make enough money, our family would live a good life. If only we could get enough customers, our business would thrive. If only we could work harder, our job would prosper. How many “if only” thoughts do we have that never lead to Jesus?

Like this official, coming to Jesus may not be the norm or the most popular choice for the situation you’re in. There may be a thousand different ways to approach the issue, but the call of Jesus today is for you to come to Him first, above all else, so that you can find life. We must understand today that there is only one source of life, and that is Jesus. For in Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. No one is excluded (all mankind). Therefore, let us repent and turn to God today for everything in our lives.
