What is That in Your Hand?

Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied.

Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭2

Have you ever heard the phrase, “things are usually not what they appear to be”? I’ve found it to be true most of the time. Take for instance two young men who were twins, working as domestic help for a billionaire. One day, this billionaire won the contract of a lifetime and he was so happy that he sent 100k to each of the two brothers and asked them to just have fun, buy anything they liked. 

The first saw the money and thought, “I finally have the access to enter the premium membership club and buy my choice alcoholic drink, without any harassment”. The second said, “I now have the seed for the multi-million dollar empire I have been dreaming of building”. His twin brother laughed at him and explained how ridiculous he sounded. Years later, the second staff moved from being a staff to being a business partner to the billionaire. 

The truth is that things often hold more potential than we access. Our perspective limits our access, but this improves when God enters the picture. When God’s influence comes into play and grants us his perspective, even the seemingly impossible becomes conceivable.

He asked Moses “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it…This” said the Lord, “is so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”  ‭‭(Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭2‬-3; 5).

Moses thought what he had in his hand was just a staff that was useful only for leading animals. Unknown to him, the spirit of God was upon it and it was a tool for the deliverance of a nation. Moses however will never see this staff for what it is until God opens his eyes. 

Do you really know the full value of what you have in your hand? Imagine, one man thinks his mobile phone is merely for making calls, and he keeps drowning in phone bills but another uses it for his livelihood constantly beaming with satisfaction as he deposits his earnings. 

Let God open your eyes. There’s more you can achieve with the skills you have for God’s kingdom and the world around you. Just a shift in perspective is all you need.
