“… I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem.” – Nehemiah 2:12
It’s easy to get excited about what God is doing in our lives, but sometimes we need to hold onto that excitement just a little bit longer. Nehemiah understood this principle well. After arriving in Jerusalem with the king’s blessing, military escort, and resources, Nehemiah didn’t immediately share his vision. He stayed quiet, waiting for the right moment. He knew God’s timing was crucial.
This is a lesson in discernment that we can all learn from. How often do we feel the urge to share what God has placed on our hearts before the time is right? It’s tempting to broadcast our plans, but wisdom teaches us to wait. Nehemiah’s restraint in this moment teaches us the importance of timing in the fulfilment of God’s will. Rushing to share our dreams can lead to misunderstanding, discouragement, or even sabotage. Sometimes, God asks us to ponder and pray in silence before we speak.
As believers, we should cultivate a secret place with God—a space where we can hear from Him and hold His promises close to our hearts until He gives the go-ahead to share. It’s not about being secretive but about being strategic. Nehemiah took time to survey the situation, assess the work ahead, and wait for the right moment to share what God had called him to do. There’s wisdom in taking our time before moving ahead with what God has said to us.
If we learn to lean on God’s timing, we will avoid unnecessary opposition or doubt. We must recognize that God’s plans unfold in His perfect timing, and sometimes that means staying quiet until everything is ready. Nehemiah’s example encourages us to be patient and wait on God before revealing what He has placed on our hearts.
PRAYER
Lord, help me understand Your timing in my life. Teach me to be patient when You ask me to wait and to hold tightly to the visions You place in my heart. I don’t want to rush ahead of You or speak out of turn; instead, I ask for the wisdom to know when to act and when to be still. Let my heart be sensitive to Your voice as I trust You in the process.
