John 13:14–15 (NKJV)
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
On a day the world celebrates love with grand gestures and public affection, Scripture invites us to consider a quieter, deeper expression of love. Jesus, knowing who He was and where He was going, knelt down and washed the feet of His disciples. This was not symbolic theater. It was intentional humility. Love chose to serve.
Foot washing was the task of the lowest servant in the house. Yet Jesus, fully aware of His authority and identity, took that place willingly. His love was not threatened by status, dignity, or reputation. True love does not need to prove itself through position. It reveals itself through service.
This moment teaches us that love is not primarily about how we feel, but how we act. Love notices needs. Love steps in quietly. Love takes responsibility even when it would be easier to be admired than to be helpful. Jesus did not serve because the disciples deserved it. He served because love expresses itself in action.
Serving love also corrects our understanding of greatness. In God’s kingdom, love does not climb upward, it bends downward. It lifts others instead of asserting importance. When love serves, it creates space for healing, trust, and unity. It removes competition and replaces it with care.
This kind of love challenges us personally. It asks us to examine our hearts. Are we willing to serve when there is no applause? Are we willing to love in ways that are unseen and inconvenient? Serving love often happens in ordinary places, in homes, workplaces, churches, and quiet moments where no one is watching.
This morning, let love move beyond words. Look for a simple opportunity to serve. It may seem small, but love expressed through service reflects the heart of Christ more clearly than any grand declaration.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for showing me what love looks like through humble service. Teach me to serve others willingly and joyfully, not seeking recognition but reflecting your heart. Open my eyes to opportunities to love through action, and shape my life to look more like yours. Amen.
