April 13: Faith That Speaks to the Future

By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.” — Hebrews 11:22 (NKJV)

Joseph’s last act was not a farewell. It was a prophecy.

After a life of extraordinary highs and devastating lows, after the pit and the prison and the palace, after years of estrangement and the tender reunion with his brothers, Joseph arrived at the end of his life with one final thing on his heart. He was not thinking about his legacy in Egypt, his political achievements, or the monuments that might bear his name. He was thinking about a promise God had made to his great-grandfather Abraham, a promise about a land and a people and an exodus that Joseph himself would never live to see.

And so he made them swear an oath: when God visits you, take my bones out of Egypt. That is a stunning statement of faith. Joseph was essentially saying: I know we are not home yet. I know this chapter in Egypt is not the final chapter. God made a promise, and that promise is going to happen, and when it does, I want to be part of it, even in death. He was so convinced of a future he could not see that he made logistical arrangements for it.

Centuries later, on the night of the Exodus, Moses did not forget. Exodus 13:19 tells us that Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. A promise spoken in faith on a deathbed was still being honoured four hundred years later. That is the reach of faith-filled words. They do not expire when the speaker does.

Joseph teaches us that faith does not just respond to the present. It makes claims on the future. It speaks into what is not yet visible and treats it as certain, because the God who promised it is certain.

Today, write down one prophetic declaration about your future, your family, your ministry, or your calling. Not a wish list, but a faith statement rooted in something God has spoken to you or shown you in His word. Speak it out loud. Date it. Keep it somewhere you will see it. You are Joseph, giving instructions about your bones: treating the unseen future as a settled fact.

Prayer

Father, give me the kind of faith that makes claims on the future. I do not want to be so consumed by the present that I stop speaking into what is coming. Like Joseph, I want to die with my heart still pointed toward your promise. Teach me to hold your word so firmly that my faith outlasts my lifetime, that the things I believe for and declare today are still being fulfilled in the generations that come after me.
