April 15: Faith That Refuses a False Identity

By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.” — Hebrews 11:24-25 (NKJV)

Moses had a choice that most people would not have refused. He had been raised in the most powerful household in the most powerful nation on earth. He had access to the finest education, the deepest comfort, and a title that guaranteed him a life of privilege and influence. “Son of Pharaoh’s daughter” was not just a family designation. It was a complete life package: security, status, and a future that any ambitious person would have envied. And Moses walked away from it.

Hebrews uses the word refused. That is a deliberate, conscious, costly decision. Moses did not stumble accidentally into solidarity with the Hebrew slaves. He chose it. He saw the full weight of what he was giving up and decided that his true identity was worth more than the false one, however prestigious the false one happened to be.

The world is constantly offering you a title. It may not be “son of Pharaoh’s daughter,” but it is something. A career identity that has quietly become more important than your calling. A social image that requires you to hide your faith to maintain. A version of yourself built around what you have achieved rather than who God says you are. These identities are not always sinful on the surface. Sometimes they are genuinely impressive. But if wearing them requires you to deny or diminish who you are in God, then they are, at their root, a false identity, and faith calls you to refuse them.

Moses did not know how his story would end when he made that choice. He simply knew who he was and decided to live accordingly. That clarity of identity is what made the refusal possible.

Today, ask yourself honestly: is there an identity I am wearing that requires me to be less than who God made me? A mask I put on to fit in, to be accepted, or to avoid the cost of being known as God’s? Identify it. Name it. And begin the process of laying it down.

Prayer

Father, show me the false identities I have put on. Show me the places where I have chosen the comfort of a borrowed title over the freedom of my true name in you. Give me the courage of Moses, to refuse what looks impressive but is not mine, and to choose the difficult path that leads to who I actually am. I want to be known by you more than I want to be impressive to anyone else. In Jesus’ name, amen.
